Bringing home an adopted greyhound is an exciting time. Many ex-racing greyhounds have never lived in a home and will need time to adapt to their new surroundings. Here are ten things you should do when you arrive home with your new friend to help them settle into their forever home.
1. Introduce slowly
When you first arrive home with your new friend, take them through the house, on the lead, to the garden area where you wish them to pee / poop. Wait until he / she has peed, give a reward such as a treat and praise, then go inside the home, with the greyhound on the lead. Whilst still on the lead, slowly introduce your hound to the areas of the home, allowing him / her to sniff and explore.
Allow your greyhound to explore their new surroundings at their own pace. Avoid overwhelming them with too many people or other pets right away.

Paddy says: I had never experienced a television or hoover and was a bit wary of them when I first arrived home. One hooman cuddled me while the other hoovered the other side of the lounge!
2. Create a safe space
Set up a designated area in your home where your greyhound can feel secure and comfortable, such as a cosy corner with bedding and toys. Where the bed is placed is important, as you will want your hound to feel part of the family but also have his / her own space.

Paddy says: my bed was placed in a corner of the lounge. From there I could see my hoomans and watch what was going on, whilst feeling safe in my own comfortable bed.

3. Establish a routine
Greyhounds thrive on routine, so try to establish a consistent schedule for feeding, walks, and playtime. This will help them settle in and feel secure.

Paddy says: My hoomans took me out to the garden every hour after I arrived home; this way I learned where to pee and poop ( not on my hoomums patio). I also learned dinner times!
4. Offer plenty of love and affection
Greyhounds are known for their gentle and affectionate nature. Shower your new pet with love, cuddles, and praise to help build a strong bond.
5. Provide a nutritious diet
Consult with your veterinarian to ensure you're feeding your greyhound a well-balanced and appropriate diet. Ensure fresh drinking water is available at all times. Greyhounds

Paddy says: I was fed kibble whilst in the rescue and my hoomans continued the same brand of kibble for a few weeks after arriving in my new home. I like my kibble soaked in water. I was given a topper of wet dog food and fed twice per day.
6. Implement a gentle exercise routine
Although greyhounds are known for their speed, they are generally low-energy dogs. A couple of short walks per day should suffice, but consult your veterinarian for specific exercise recommendations.

Paddy says: I was taken for walks at the same time each day!
7. Be patient during the adjustment period
Remember that it takes time for your greyhound to fully settle into their new home. Be patient and understanding as they acclimatise to their new surroundings and routine.
8. Socialise gradually
Introduce your greyhound to new people, pets, and situations slowly and in a controlled manner. This will help them feel more comfortable and confident in various environments.
9. Start basic training
Greyhounds are intelligent dogs, so begin teaching them basic commands. Positive reinforcement techniques work best, using treats and praise.

Paddy says: I learned to sit! I have also learned to "wait".
10. Schedule a vet visit
Take your greyhound to the veterinarian for a thorough check-up, vaccinations, and any necessary medical treatments. This will ensure they are healthy and receive any required preventative care.
Remember, each greyhound is unique, so always observe their behaviour and adjust your approach accordingly. Enjoy the journey of building a wonderful life together!
