Welcoming a greyhound into your home is an incredible experience. These gentle and majestic creatures deserve the utmost care and consideration. To ensure your adopted greyhound feels loved, comfortable, and safe, it's important to have a few essential items ready. Here, we’ll cover twelve must-have items that will make your greyhound's transition into their new forever home smooth and delightful.

  1. Comfy Bed

Invest in a cosy, orthopaedic dog bed designed specifically for larger breeds like greyhounds. Their lean bodies will appreciate the cushioning and support for a good night's sleep.

Paddy says: I weigh 35kg and I’ve got an XXL bed, great for roaching!

2.Durable Leash and Collar with tag

Choose a sturdy leash and collar to ensure the safety of your greyhound during walks. Greyhounds are sighthounds, so their prey drive might kick in if they spot something intriguing. Opt for a collar that won't slip off easily and a leash that provides a secure grip. A collar and tag are essential as the law states that dogs must wear a collar and a tag when in public.

Paddy says: My hoomans prefer a double-ended lead. Whilst I personally don’t have a high prey drive, I am interested in small furries such as cats and squirrels and will give chase. A double ended lead means that my hooman has more peace of mind if one connection fails; especially when I can run so fast and cover quite a distance in a short time! A double ended lead means that I have to walk closer to my hooman but I still get lots of opportunities to sniff!

My tag is attached to a soft and comfortable padded collar. The tag does not have my name on it (on the advice from the rescue charity). I have “I’m chipped” on one side and a contact number on the reverse of the tag.

3. Well-Fitting Harness

Greyhounds have slender necks and can slip out of collars. A harness provides better control and prevents any accidental escapes during walks or outings. Look for a harness specifically designed for deep-chested breeds.

4. Gentle Leader or Martingale Collar

Greyhounds have slim heads and delicate necks, making them prone to injury if they pull excessively. A gentle leader or martingale collar can help discourage pulling and provide safer control without causing discomfort.

5. Sighthound-Specific Coat

Greyhounds have thin fur and minimal body fat, making them more sensitive to cold temperatures. Invest in a well-fitted, sighthound-specific coat to keep your greyhound warm and protected during chilly walks.

6. Muzzle

While not all greyhounds require muzzles, it's essential to have one on hand for safety purposes. Some greyhounds may have a high prey drive or be anxious in certain situations, and a muzzle can prevent any potential incidents.

Paddy says: Whilst I am quite chilled out and have a lower prey drive, I wore a muzzle when out for walks for the first 3 months. I was used to wearing a muzzle and could still sniff, eat and drink whilst wearing it.

7. Elevated Feeding Bowls

Greyhounds, like many larger breeds, benefit from elevated feeding bowls. These raised bowls promote better digestion and minimise strain on their necks.

8. Toys

Greyhounds are intelligent dogs that require mental stimulation. Invest in interactive toys, such as treat-dispensing puzzles or durable chew toys, to keep their minds engaged and prevent boredom.

9. Grooming Tools

Greyhounds have short, sleek hair that requires minimal grooming. However, having a soft-bristle brush and a rubber grooming mitt can help keep their coats shiny and remove loose hair effectively.

10. Car Safety Equipment

Ensure your greyhound's safety during car rides by using a secure harness or a dog-specific seatbelt attachment. This will prevent them from roaming around the vehicle and protect them in case of sudden stops or accidents.

Paddy says: I use a harness for going in the car!

11. High Quality Dog Food and Tasty Treats

Choosing the right dog food is crucial for your greyhound's overall health. Look for a high-quality, balanced diet specifically formulated for large breeds or greyhounds. Consult with your veterinarian to determine the best dietary options for your furry friend.

Treats can be a wonderful tool for training, rewarding good behaviour, or simply showing your greyhound some extra love. Opt for treats that are specifically formulated for larger breeds and are low in calories to help maintain a healthy weight. It's also important to avoid treats that contain harmful ingredients such as artificial preservatives or excessive fillers.

Remember to introduce new food and treats gradually, observing your greyhound's reactions and any potential allergies. Regularly monitor their weight to ensure a healthy balance between meals and treats.

By providing your adopted greyhound with nutritious food and delicious treats, you'll be promoting their overall well-being and strengthening the bond between you.

Paddy says: I love treats!

12. Patience, Love, and Care

While not a tangible item, these are undoubtedly the most crucial elements for your adopted greyhound's well-being. Shower them with love, patience, and care, creating a nurturing environment where they can thrive and feel completely at home.

Paddy says: I love cuddles and snuggles!

Conclusion:

Preparing your home with these 12 essential items for your beloved adopted greyhound will ensure a smooth and comfortable transition for your adopted greyhound. Remember, each greyhound is unique, so make adjustments and additions based on your dog's specific needs. With the right tools and your loving companionship, your adopted greyhound will flourish in their new forever home.
